Food that is healthy for humans can be dangerous for dogs. The veterinary professionals at Friendly Animal Hospital in Huntington Beach have compiled the following list of food items that are toxic to dogs. If your dog ingests any of the following foods, bring them to a veterinariain as soon as possible.
Chocolate: This is probably one of the best known dangerous foods, but it's rarely as dangerous as its reputation. To truly be dangerous, most dogs will need to eat a lot of chocolate with a very high amount of cocoa. In most cases, the dog will spit out the chocolate before they ingest a dangerous amount. For this reason, if your dog has eaten something with chocolate, the vet will usually recommend offering the dog a lot of water and watching him or her for a reaction rather than coming in for an emergency appointment.
Caffeine: Think of caffeine consumption and your dog in the same way you view caffeine consumption with a similar-sized human. Smaller dogs can get very sick or experience tremors from a single cup of coffee, while larger dogs may not even notice what they drank.
Garlic and Onions: These foods can cause an upset stomach in most dogs. Fortunately, they tend not to eat them on their own, but make sure you're not giving your dog table scraps with them.
